Oncology Nursing

This two-day workshop is designed for those registered professional nurses who are considering taking the ONCC examination in Oncology.

This review will provide the participant with an overview of the key concepts and current nursing practice related to oncology nursing in preparation for the oncology certification examination and to broaden the participant's body of knowledge.

The ONCC exam is offered throughout the year. The website www.oncc.org, is available to complete the application process and view eligibility criteria to sit for the exam.

Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the techniques needed to prepare for the Oncology Nursing Certification Examination.
  • Discuss and review concepts of health promotion, epidemiology, prevention, current screening methodology in certain cancers and early detection of cancer.
  • Review the scientific basis for oncology diseases and oncology practice.
  • Explore current treatment modalities and their specific roles in cancer prevention and treatment.
  • Discuss the etiology of symptoms experienced by oncology patients and their management.
  • Explore the psychosocial dimensions of care of the oncology patient.
  • Review Oncologic emergencies, the identification, care and treatment strategies associated with each.
  • Discuss the concept of survivorship, the effects and concerns of those living with cancer.
  • Explore Palliative and End of Life Care; identifying the unique role each plays in the continuum of care of the patient living with cancer.
  • Review and discuss professional expectations, quality and accrediting organizations and their roles in care of the patient with cancer.
