Stroke kills almost 130,000 Americans each year and is currently the leading cause of serious long term disability. Early intervention and prevention as well as appropriate management of patients with potential for development and experiencing a stroke is the key to improving survival. Nursing is an essential part of the healthcare team for this patient population of for treatment that can improve outcomes.

This program is intended to improve knowledge base by providing the registered nurse caring for stroke patients with the latest information about treatment modalities that reduce the number of patients with long term disabilities as a result of stroke and to prepare the registered nurse for the Stroke Certification Exam offered by the ABNN.

Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and explain the vascular and structural anatomy of the human brain.
  • Discuss teaching methods for patients and their families regarding the risk factors and lifestyle modifications necessary to prevent initial or secondary stroke.
  • Describe the emergency management of the patient from the field to initial triage in ED.
  • Identify the appropriate diagnostic tests for the stroke patient and the care prior and post-test.
  • Identify the various kinds of strokes and apply the current stroke guidelines for acute care management.
  • Discuss medications currently available and used in the medical management of stroke patients. Explain the indications and side effects of medications.
  • Discuss the different methods used or discouraged when rehabilitating the stroke patient.
  • Differentiate between types of strokes centers and certifications and use of Core Measures to improve the quality and outcomes in patient care
