Nephrology

This program is designed to prepare RNs to successfully pass the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission examination. Highlighting the current trends and information integral to practice, the participant will come away with increased knowledge and confidence that they are prepared to join the exclusive ranks of the Certified Nephrology Nurse. The CNN consists of five content areas: Renal
Failure Concepts, Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Transplant and Acute Therapies. All topics are addressed with information, examples and review of questions. If you are looking for a dynamic course delivered in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and taught by an expert with a wealth of knowledge, this course is for you.

The NNCC examination is computerized, and offered throughout the year. The website at www.nnccexam.org will guide you through the application process.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Identify patients who have or are at risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Describe strategies to slow progression to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
  • Discuss occurrence, prevention, and treatment of complications and co-morbid conditions of CKD.
  • Describe the flow dynamics that allows removal of waste, excess water and electrolytes.
  • Explain the anatomy and function on the nephron.
  • Discuss how the renin-angiotensin system affects blood pressure.
  • List three principles of Peritoneal Dialysis (PD).
  • Name four types of peritoneal transport.
  • Identify basic adequacy testing.
  • Discuss the different types of kidney rejection.
  • Explain how a kidney-paired exchange donation works.
  • Describe the immunological testing that must occur before a renal failure patient receives a kidney.

Twelve (12) contact hours will be awarded for this workshop. In order to receive contact hours, participants are required to attend both sessions and complete an evaluation.
